Thousands of units of children’s jewelry are being recalled due to excessive cadmium.
Health Canada said it found that Hot Focus Petite Boutique Tie-Dye Butterfly, Rainbow and Glow in the Dark children’s jewelry sets had more than the allowable amount in them of cadmium, a heavy metal. The jewelry and accessories are inside a carrying case, the agency said.
The children’s jewelry regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act prohibit the sale, importation or advertisement of products intended for children under the age of 15 that contain “130 mg/kg total cadmium if the jewelry item is small enough to be totally enclosed in the small parts cylinder when a force of not more than 4.45 N is applied, ”according to Health Canada.

The agency warns that exposure to cadmium can lead to anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, serious brain injuries, convulsions, a coma or even death and can affect the liver, kidneys, heart and immune system.
More than 4,700 jewelry sets were sold in Canada from June 2022 to March of this year.
TJX, the parent company of the stores where the products were sold, has not reported any health issues. Consumers are being asked to return the product to Winners, HomeSense or Marshalls for a refund.
