Today we’re going to take a look at where to watch The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and what streaming service you can stream it on.

Peter Jackson and co caught the world’s attention with the release of The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001, never before had such an attempt to put JRR Tolkein’s greatest work on the silver screen as a live-action grandiose fantasy drama but Jackson with the help of New Line Cinema had succeeded in doing so with The Fellowship. So the sequel had a lot to live up to, the world was watching and anticipating its release, they didn’t have to wait long because, at the end of 2002, The Two Towers premiered. The Two Towers further elaborated on the overarching theme of good versus evil, which culminated in the biggest and baddest battle of Middle Earth to date with the Battle of Helms deep. The film has three interwoven stories running throughout as our plucky Fellowship parted ways, partly out of choice but mostly out of necessity, as the dark lord Sauron was accumulating more power. The ring needed to be destroyed.

The Murkiness of Morality

As mentioned, The Two Towers further elaborated on the overarching theme of good versus evil that was laid out in The Fellowship of The Ring, however, morality and the clear distinction between the forces of good and bad are a bit blurred in The Two Towers. This is presented to us through many characters and their internal and external struggles.

At the start of The Two Towers, we begin following three different storylines due to the dissolution of The Fellowship. Partly due to necessity, but also because of the danger imposed by Boromir. Although trying to embody righteousness and legality whilst representing the Kingdom of Gondor, Boromir allows the ring to manipulate his mind and attempts to take the ring for himself. He soon comes to his senses and ultimately saves Merry and Pippin’s life from the Uruk Hai, but the blurring between the ‘good’ characters and their antagonistic actions is something that is continued all the way throughout The Two Towers.

When we are first introduced to the King of Rohan, he is in direct straits as, although he cares about his kingdom he has allowed himself to be completely manipulated and poisoned by Wormtongue, who is in cahoots with Saruman. Théoden begins the film as an extension of Saruman’s will, ultimately bad and detrimental to the good people of Rohan who are opposed to the Dark Lord and his servants. However, we see the good in Théoden after his emancipation from Wormtongue’s poison, and he ends the film as a martyr to the cause of good.

Gollum is perhaps the most obvious example of the dance between good and bad. Although he has spent hundreds of years festering in the caves of Middle-Earth under the Ring’s tutelage, there is still an honest desire to do good and try and help Frodo and Sam find their way to Mount Doom and to keep his promise to Frodo. This is shown most particularly when Gollum is having a schizophrenic episode, for lack of a better term, and argues with himself between choosing to lead Frodo and Sam on a safe path or to take them through the Dead Marshes. Ultimately, we know that Gollum allows evil to win and betrays the promise he made to Frodo and this is what separates Gollum from Théoden and Boromir, although they are all influenced by the powers of evil Théodon and Boromir remain ‘good’ as their choices prevail . The murkiness of good and evil is present throughout The Two Towers, and it is a theme that cannot be ignored.
